Frieze groups in Bengal Temples

Frieze patterns are one-dimensional isometries. They can be one of seven variants. This student research group at Cheenta is investigating Frieze groups in ancient Bengal Temple architecture.

Meet the Research Group

This student research group at Cheenta is advised by Dr. Ashani Dasgupta. It consists of school students (mostly from middle and high school).
Parambrata Dutta

Parambrata Dutta

Class 10, India
I am highly interested in mathematics and Physics and preparing for ioqm and ioqp .

What I am learning in this project:

I want to become a researcher in my future and this project is giving a path to me . From this project I learnt about group theory and symmetries. I also learnt how to find symmetries on the walls of the temple . I thank team cheenta for giving me such a golden opportunity.
Alivia Roy

Alivia Roy

Class 9, India
I am Alivia Roy, a grade 9 student who is interested in mathematics.

What I am learning in this project:

I learnt group theory and different types of symmetry. I also got to see the beauty of the Indian Temples and how to find the symmetries in their walls.
Anay Misra

Anay Misra

Class 11, India
I am Anay Misra, a grade 11 student who is interested in Mathematics and Computer Science.

What I am learning in this project:

I learnt group theory and different types of symmetry and Frieze Groups. I also got to apply my knowledge on the Bishnupura Temple and how to find the symmetries in the architecture.

I thank the Cheenta team for giving me such a fine opportunity.
Soumabha Roy

Soumabha Roy

Class 12, India
This is soumabha. Currently studying in class 12. I found deep interest in mathematics and statistics.

What I am learning in this project:

I learnt some concepts on group theory and symmetries. Different types of symmetries and particularly Frieze groups are the topics that have been gone through. I have also learnt how to find out any kind of symmetry in architecture.
I would like to thank Cheenta team for giving me this chance to participate in this research project.
Shaurya Mehta

Shaurya Mehta

Year 9, UK
My name is Shaurya. I’m in year 9 and I am very interested in mathematics and especially number theory.

What I am learning in this project:

This project was very enlightening for me as I realised that physical properties are related to mathematical properties and if objects look good they follow mathematical patterns. I was also introduced to group theory which I found very interesting. Thank you sir for the opportunity.
Gurnoor

Gurnoor

Class 10, India
My name is Gurnoor and I am currently studying in class 10. I am preparing for the various Math Olympiads. I am deeply interested in Mathematics and my favourite topics are Combinatorics and Number Theory.

What I am learning in this project:

I learnt some basic concepts of Group Theory and Symmetries. I got to know about the different kinds of groups of symmetries in Art especially Indian Temples.

I thank Cheenta for providing me with ths wonderful opportunity for research
